Mexico 1950 definitives - Architecture

Mensaje por Rein »

The 1950 Architecture definitives of Mexico have been neglected for quite some time at least that is how it seemed. Some vital information was hidden in long forgotten Mexican publications, until on a Facebook page a Mexican collector did reveal the publication of 1968....

Mexico 1950 definitives - "Architecture"

Mensaje por Rein »

The majority of philatelists interested in the stamps of Mexico are worried about the great number of varieties that have appeared during decennia while the definitives were valid.

Thanks to the officials of the TIEV [Talleres de Impresion de Estampillas y Valores] of the Ministry of Finance and Public Funds, we have reviewed the specimens of the various printings of the stamps mentioned above as well as all other data to prepare this article, both paying attention to the machinery and the types of paper used.

The Printing House of the Ministry of Finance had been using the following printing presses for the definitives:

10 machines of the "WAITE" type, one "WIFAG" press and two "GOEBEL" presses.

The WAITE presses are flat-bed, do only produce recess-printed stamps, in printing sheets of 2 counter sheets of 30 for the Airmail or 2 counter sheets of 60 for the normal stamps. They have perforating blocks gauging 10 1/2 for the airmail stamps and 14 for the normal stamps, they are hand fed with sheets of paper, cut from reels into the size required. The reels of paper having the watermark "MEX-MEX" and the National Coat of Arms, in the horizontal direction. The sheets were subsequently fed into the machine and the stamps have a normal or up-side-down watermark. ...
What worries me is that the stamps that are supposed to have been printed on that press do NOT look like normal recess-printed stamps but rather like unscreened photogravure!
