P&R I Unwatermarked Opaque paper (NOP) and grid (NGR)

Here is a 25cNOP

And here is a beautiful cover with three 50cNOPs, properly dated 1948, when most of these stamps were first printed/issued. Notice that the thickness of the paper causes the perforation machine to choke.

Thanks to the listing by Dario Bardi, I learned of two directions of this paper, which I have verified. Here is a comparison scan.

The no watermark papers - as dealt with in Pettigiani's book - also originate from the Zárater paper mills although from a much earlier period! In the 1945-1948 period practically all stamps were printed on paper without watermark. The paper mesh always reflects a wire structure that was symmetrical.

Pettigiani recognizes 2 main types - just as Dario Bardi did:

R = grené, i.e. the rhombos are very clear; Bardi's SF 1 and SF 2.

and

S = trama cerrada or "closed wire" were you can not see the rhombos; only during the 1947-1948 period; Bardi's SF 3.

The reference for the Trama Cerrada in the commemoratives are:

MT 491 = 24.11.1947 Return of the Ashes of San Martin's parents, printed in offset-litho

This reference is a bit strange as other types of paper had been used as well for this stamp i.e Rayos Rectos Nitidos!

MT 488 = 05.10.1947 Fregat Sarmiento
MT 492 = 24.12.1947 5c Cruzada Escolar

can have both R and S! And the Cruzada Escolar exists also on Rayos Rectos Nitidos!

Pettigiani sees 3 subtypes of S - of which 2 show only very minute pin points when holding the stamps against a strong light source. And when there is a hue of sheen a reference was made to the Satinado. This subtype had also been called the Canadian paper believing it originates from Canada. The 3rd subtype shows some traces of rhombos...

Carlos Raul Gomez has TWO uncoated no watermark papers:

(02) Mate Nacional, granulado paralelo al lado mayor/menor.
(32) Mate Canadiense.

Hence NO trama cerrada here as Pettigiani or Bardi have as unwatermarked paper produced by Zárate!

Which examples of the commemoratives does Gomez give?

- Granulado paralelo al lado mayor, abierto y bien visible. Mediano a delgado, algo traslúcido y poroso

and occasionally:

- Granulado paralelo al lado menor, abierto y bien visible, mediano a delgado, algo traslúcido y poroso.

The direction of paper runs parallel to the LONG side of the stamp predominantly [lado mayor].

The Canadian paper turns up as "Trama cerrada e invisible. Mediano a grueso, traslúcido y algo poroso".

Rein,
Saludos,
Merlo

José,

the very existence of the Canadian paper is clear to me! What I see is that the various experts on this subject have not made it clear enough and certainly not while giving examples that may not exist!

Pettigiani mentions the

1/2c Belgrano
1c Sarmiento
2c Urquiza
3c JSM in grey
3c Moreno in grey

as existing with "trama cerrada"

The 1/2c is pretty common according to Bardi! I have not seen a single copy of it! I do not think the 1c Sarmiento and the 3c JSM in grey exist at all!

As to most of the small sized stamps the direction of paper for the opaque paper is horizontal or "m"!

However I found the 1c Sarmiento today with a direction of paper "M" or vertical!

The 2c Urquiza has a direction of paper horizontal or 'm" for the opaque version!

Although not quite visible with our eyes, the scanner reveals the symmetrical structure of the paper wire!

It is strange that ALL publications sofar have NOT given any information about the "eje de enrollamiento" of the "trama cerrada"!
