Nestor,

making mistakes is no problem. I am learning still - from everybody around here - and from acquiring new material that hadn't been sorted out.

I really need the old publications to understand how it got so far that we ended up with a classification as we have now. Some observations made once were completely correct taking into consideration the techniques available then and now.

As I have told before, I have quite a few years of experience with recognizing stamp printing and manufacturering methods - getting close to 40 years ;) - and so far I had the opportunity to break down the "DaVinci Code" top modern day stamps for several countries like Israel, Poland, Indonesia, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria. Time to do the same with Argentina and then I am very grateful for the support I get from you and other philatelists like Tony Rubiera and Luis Recagno.

Martin,

your scans are fine as long as you need the orientation of the AЯ relative to the stamp design and do not care about the watermark it self.

My 2 types - orthogonal [direction of paper and the line of AЯ are perpendicular] or parallel [direction of paper and th e line of AЯ are parallel] are basic notions not only for Argentina. The watermark design has a completely different orientation on the dandy-roll [the cylinder which makes the "impression" in the paper just before the product has finished].

In your scans I need to find the direction of paper and I can not as they are not detailed enough...

Measuring the size of the sun and the letters is great but need good measuring equipment after having made visible the watermark in the first place.

In order to see whether the watermark is orthogonal or parallel is suffices to establish the direction of paper first [eje de enrollamiento]. I am sure that D.A. Bardi or J.Merlo have described this in Spanish much better than I can do in English for Spanish speaking persons. Make sure you have the stamps with the axis in a vertical position [as in my last scans] and then look at the alignement of the letters....

The 1956 1st Anniversary of the September Revolution of 1955 has 2 types of paper that can not be found in the Tello Meggia catalogue as the line of AЯ is the same in both cases - horizontal relative to the stamp design.

In reality we are dealing with a parallel watermark in combination with a horizontal direction of paper (eje de enrollamiento) or an orthogonal watermark in combination with a vertical direction of paper (eje de enrollamiento).

Parallel:

Orthogonal:

Once more said, it is utmost important to establish the direction of paper!!

Hola

Jorge,
your scans are excellent but if I understood Mello Teggia properly, the type of paper used for all lower values [exc. 45c] is imported paper and only a few values have got national paper. Besides I also understood that the national paper only started in 1953.
So the sharp watermarks are from the imported paper and the fuzzy ones from the national paper - just the other way around!
Tienes toda la razón
So...
Filigranas más nítidas y notorias (sharp watermarks) = papel Mate importado
Filigranas menos visibles o difusas (fuzzy watermarks) = Mate nacional

Saludos

Jorge,

with the Evita set it is quite easy to tell which is the imported paper and which not. The most difficult part is yet to come - how to tell the local manufactured papers apart???? Not only with the Evita stamps but with everything later on ;)
