Chilean stamp papers!

Mensaje por Rein »

Encouraged by several other stamp collectors who knew I was a fervent student of stamp paper, I started to study a few selected stamps of which I was told there were at least 4 types of paper and hence 16 = 4x4 orientations of the watermark!

I quickly found out that the Chile stamps got printed in Santiago since 1915 in either typography [not that many] and in offset-litho and recess!

The printing of stamps in offset-litho started more or less i the same period as the Casa de Moneda did in Argentina!

Jorge,

the two watermarks DDR+Posthorn [Corno] differ just as the Argentina Sun+RA can be distinugished into the parallel and orthogonal watermarks:

parallel - DDR and the "eje de enrollamiento" are parallel
orthogonal - DDR and the "eje de enrollamiento" are perpendicular

saludos, Rein

P.S.

the Chile 1928-1960 stamps ALSO have the flower+star in these two types!

- parallel - flowers+stars run paralelel to the "eje de enrollamiento"
- orthogonal - - flowers+stars are perpendicularl to the "eje de enrollamiento"

So far I have seen the orthogonal versions only in the early period 1928-1931 especially with the very thin type of papers!

Can you refer to any publication in Chile as to these watermarks???
In another Foro some useful info got available that is quite relevant for the thread here!

Hello Rein!

Exactly!, DDR+Posthorn watermarks are way parallel and orthogonal to the axis of the paper, like Argentinian Sun+RA (eje de enrollamiento - axis of curves).

In the Chilean case, orthogonal watermark (shield and star multiple) are found only in the papers that we know here as "pelure", thin and medium (1928-1932).

On thick papers watermark are always parallel.
This means that the dandy roll was different.

The paper's suppliers was different too :
Pelure (onion skin) : Wiggins Teape
Thin : Samuel Jones & Co. London
Medium : Samuel Jones & Co.
Thick : Wiggins Teape - Portals (UK) - Samuel Jones (three differents)

Information about watermarks and papers used in chilean stamps of those years are published in some editions of Chile Filatélico magazine (1929 until today)

I don't know any specific book dedicated to it, except for the information that comes in the specialized catalogue edited by SOFICH (Sociedad Filatélica de Chile).

Possibly it has also published something about these topic in the "Chile Specialist", a magazine edited by the "Chile Specialist Association", which is a group of foreign philatelists devoted to chilean stamps and postal history (in USA).

Best Regards
Jorge
This confirms to some extent what have thought already - about the papers coming from England!

Highest to get into the papers themselves!

The watermark looks like a vertical column of shields+stars that alternates as to their mutual positions/heights. The upright pattern has the 5-pointed star with the point upwards!
