Tony,
what you have brought to our attention is just the top of the iceberg!
Presenting newer generations of philatelists with a specialised catalogue is in itself an enormous achievement and the authors should get their praise for that!
Nevertheless there are 2 major fields of problems:
- fundamental problems that have effected the choice of numbering which can NOT be undone! Probably all Argentinean catalogue have suffered from this: would-be chronological order of the stamp issues and grouping of definitives that should not be grouped together to subsequently be split up according to watermark groups. The result is a systematical mess in which you can not find a particular stamp of a certain design, colour and face value. If you are not aware of the fact that a certain stamp also exists without watermark you have a hell to discover that....
- problems of inconsistency and simply wrong facts.
The latter field of problems is the one we can tackle now! And we should give it priority so it can be mended before the next edition. If a certain stamp paper is called tizado delgado here and satinado con sol ovalado elsewhere - G.J. can correct this in a future edition. If a certain stamp is to supposed to be printed in offset-litho whereas in fact it was printed in photogravure, GJ can correct it. The 1948 Dia del Agricultor is sadly enough not the only one, but at least the oldest!! That mistake has a loooooong traditiooooon.....
The fundamental problems are here to stay, we cannot expect GJ to change their numbering system that they just invented
However, future publishers should realise a few things!
After the initial PyR series, the Argentinean Post Office has come up with short-lasting and short series but also with isolated definitives. You can NOT bundle them into a encompassing series again and call it PyR II and PyR III, etc...
Treat certain stamps as a short set and leave others to be isolated!
some examples:
1942 Post Office
1945 5c JSM
1954 20, 40c JSM
1961 2,4, 8, 10, 20p JSM
bundle the cogwheels, the quebrachos, the tall JSM's; the tall G. Brown's, etc... And put all the "landscapes" together...
Bring back the 20c Brown and the 5c Hernandez into the PyR I setting....
This is not so easy, we are still to make haphazard decisions.
But most of all - do NOT spread the various types of paper! All types of paper for the 5c JSM in typography should stick together, as those for the 5c JSM in offset-litho. AND incorporate the Servicio Oficial in the set where they belong - all 5c JSM's on the same page(s).
This should do for now to re-think!
GOOGLE:
Tony,
