Double-H perforation combs

Mensaje por Rein »

We are used to have a comb that in one strike produces

-----------------------------

a single row comb or even a double row comb:

-----------------------------
| | | | | | | | | | | | |
-----------------------------
| | | | | | | | | | | | |

yet we have several other options of which the one with the new strike begiinng halfway is the more intriguing one!

Around 1963 collectors found out about New Zealand stamps displaying this feature! Recently collector renewed their interest:

and started a lively discussion....

From "Campbell Paterson Handbook of New Zealand Stamps":

The New Zealand comb perforation had the shape of a double-H [twice an "H" on top of each other]!

New Zealand was not the only country with a stamp printer using such a device!

Israel's State Printers - Hakirya - also had a Chambon photogravure rotary press using the double-H comb!

The 3 blocks of the 2 sheqel are consecutive ones, from left to right on top of each other. You can see the narrow teeth. The top margin of the 2nd block corresponds with the bottom of the middle stamp in the 1st block; the top margin of the 3rd block with the bottom of the middle stamp of the 2nd block, etc... From top to bottom - 8 teeth - narrow/thick - 9 teeth = 18 in total. The bottom margins do somewhat show the "irregelar" teeth.

The 0.08 and 0.12 seem to have the perforation block mounted upsidedown as all stamps [incl. 2shql] have the ink flowing upwards and they have 8 teeth downwards!!!

Note the different type of papers for the 0.08!

When we are having a good look at the blocks of the 2 sheqel we may see apart from the very thin teeth also the "direction of printing"
- the ink flowing upwards - which usually in Argentina is suspected of a "double impression" which it pbviously not is! :)
