P&R 1 10c Rivadavia in offset-litho

Although some find it exteremely difficult to tell typography from offset-litho, to keep things clear I think a separate thread for the offset-litho should be provided for.

The offset-litho has 3 types:

Type A:



Type B;



Type C:



A and C have a round left collar, B has a pointed left collar.

Have a good look at the "A" 's of "Rivadavia":

the second leg of the first "A" is shorter!

In type A we have discovered some systematical "flaws" probably belonging to a root or base block, but this is not so certain

Trying to establish a possible "base block" we are looking for characteristiscs that repeat them self and how regular ...

The 10c Rivadavia - certainly the typographed one - is full of characteristics in that respect that the sheet-fed stamps have some sort of base block, the reel-fed stamps do NOT have it! A sheet of 10x10 may have an unknown number of type II's AND type III's !

The 10c Rivadavia in offset-litho has yet to get studied. A first characteristic for type A has been found:








We will see that this characteristic is to be found in several positions with no system in it!!

This stamp with the Tela paper [1E3c] shows the 2 described characteristic with yet another one:

The earlier referred to block of 30 [=5x6] does have more interesting characteristics than I had noticed at first:

As we can all see, there is still no logic in the arrangement of the characteristics. Had it been just the ruptures in the horizontal lines we could have called it coincidence, but there are always accompanying features!

In type B I haven't been able to find possible candidates for a root block.

Just one flaw that probably occurs only once per sheet;

The above flaw was not mentioned by Pettigiani in his Handbook - still this flaw occurs on ALL types of paper the 10c Rivadavia in offset-litho type B has!

As it is a not such a common flaw the probability that it belongs to the root block is nil. Therefor we may assume that

there was only ONE plate for type B

Sometimes a "nice" postmark can cover the best known characteristics of the types of the 10c Rivadavia in offset-litho!

The 10c is still full of surprises!

As Tony has remarked several times,the age of good scanners gave us the possibility of very close scans of details we otherwise would have missed.

I do not fully agree! First of all we need to "scan" our stamps with our own eyes and magnifying glasses! Only then we will find the details of individual stamps as we would never have computer scanned ALL our stamps.

The computer scan enables us to display the discoveries and publish them so other collectors can easily see them...

And, true, occasionally while studying the already made scans, we suddenly see things we hadn't seen before
