As I said before in another thread the Revista de la Societad Filatelica Argentina does not contain much about contemporary stamps! Publishing some official Decrees is quite handy but so far doe snot reveal too much news.

In the 1951-1969 period ther is really only ONE article about contemporary stamps. Issued in 1951! Later on there are a few very short news clips of interest, but now first the 1951 article in the November-December issue:

Who wrote this article????

There is no author mentioned... But among the "collaborators" of that particular issue of the magazine "han colaborado en este numero" we find Dr. Juan Salinas de Lozada!!!

In the article we read that he was the one who discovered the Rayos Rectos watermark and that the watermark had been referred to by some as "Filigrana Salinas" or Salinas Watermark!

Probably the elder Foristos may remember him, but I could not find much in the internet but for a few aspects:

- SALINAS DE LOZADA, JUAN. Nació en Cochabamba en 1888. Abogado, escritor, diplomático. Dirigió el segundo Congreso Universitario de 1909. Cumplió funciones diplomáticas y periodísticas.

An advocate, writer and diplomate! Born in Cochabamba, Bolivia!

- His best know work - "EL CUATRO REALES DE 1866 DEL ECUADOR" published in 1944

A foreigner making discoveries in the field of Argentine stamps! And after 70 years no trace left????

A few remarkable things!

There is no mentioning of the emission of 1935!! There are references to the 1942-1943, 1949 and 1950 emissions!!!

No reference to the types of paper now known as Austriaco, Holandés, Tela, Rayado Vertical, Rayado Horizontal, Mate Lustroso or Norte Americano!

Can we safely assume that these types of watermark only came to the light thanks to the writings of José Merlo in 1966????

I hadn't noticed this before! Having this copy of Kneitschel for more than a year!

Looks like a catalogue from the Library of Mr Ambassador himself!

In the same year Victor Kneitschel refers to the Filigrana Salinas as Rayos Largos!!!

Instead of watermark "O" the "Q" was used! Later catalogues - GJ'10 - use the Q for a "ovalado" instead of a circular Sun!

The vertical distances 20 and 25mm plus the diameters result in a heart-to heart distance of 30mm cq 35mm!

This is exactly the h-t-h distance that is so characteristic for the Filigrana Salinas. The accent on the the straight rays I have always found a bit overdone as in practice the rays are not always straight.

In the AFRA Suplemento of May 1950 we can find already an article on the Salinas watermarks!

Rein,

A remarkable selection of references, no doubt.
