The definitves of any country are a delight for philatelists!
So, the 1961 definitive series with the portrait of Walter Ulbricht, the Chairman of the State Council, is one that the collectors of the GDR have studied to some extent and most of it has been published in the Specialized catalogues of Germany to name the Michel Spezial Katalog as the most influential one!
Nevertheless, as we have experienced with Argentina definitives, some things have been overlooked for years!

During the more than 10 years of its existence several changes of the design had been made.
The Specialized Catalogue of Michel [German] has an extensive description of these changes, but there is not much of a systematical approach! The emphasis is on the 10pf that had indeed most of the changes but the other values have their types too...
The first major change in design seemed to have taken place in 1969 as from there on most values got printed in this new design. Michel refers to them by type I and type II.
They simply overlooked the fact that there were 3 [three] main types with a possible sub-division...
The types according to Michel:
Type I - no subtypes
Type II
