Austrian stamps - black fibers sideways or upright?!

Comparing the stamp production of several European countries in thwe 1860-1920 period, there is ONE aspect of the Austrian stamp production that appears rather primitive!

Perforations!!

Did the State Printing Works really have no controll over how to perforate stamps??? I can not seriously believe that!

There must have been some terrible influence coming out of the philatelic world in that time to let us flood in the perforations deluge... Coming close to what happened in other banana republics...

But, due to that deluge probably the philatelists then could not notice the variation in the black fibers most of these Austrian stamps had! They simply missed it and haven't even noticed it during the last century....

The cancellations of several nowadays non-Austria towns are very interesting!

Usually, when the paper got moistened you can tell the direction of paper by the way the stamps is scrolling!

This does NOT go with these black fibers stamps!

All examples have upright fibers here!

Rein,
Perhaps the position of fibers - upright or sideways- respond to paper format, i.e. it´s been cut into sheets ofa determined size from a lrge piece of paper the original with of paper roll width. It happenes in Argentina San Martín 1917 type, where from a large sheet with hexagons watermark they obtained sheets to print 200 stamps From the major sheet they cut out 5 sheets with verical hexagons and from the remainder they obtained two sheets with horizontal hexagons. Qty of sheets i´m mentioning might be not accurate and I hope to fing the sheets cutting diagram Bose Illustrated in a journal about 1930. Saludos,
José

José,

the proportions we get in such cases may be 1:3 or 2:5; anyhow not such as my Austrian collector reported like 1:20!
