Direction of Printing - Dirección de la impresión

The notion "direction of printing" may sound familiar to you, but probably just in the context of the UK Machins.

The phenomenon had been discovered by Douglas Myall ("Deegam") in 1973 who applied this to the Machin stamps of the UK to tell some coil stamps or booklet stamps apart from the usual counter sheet stamps.

At more or less the same time the phenomenon was also discovered by Huig Tielman in the Netherlands who saw it in the 25c Queen Juliana booklet stamps that had been printed in reels with the left half upright and the other half upsidedown. He could thus tell booklets originating from the left from those from the right!

Huig inspired me to have a good look at all photogravure printed stamps and I found out that you could establish the direction of printing basically in all stamps that had been printed with cylinders so not just in photogravure but also in offset-litho and in recess!

I gave the four directions - the preferential direction where the ink would flow - the codes B [oven = upwards], O [onder = downwards], L [to the left] and R [ to the right]. I'm using this way of denoting the directions of printing since 1974.

El fenómeno había sido descubierto por Douglas Myall ( "Deegam") en 1973, que aplicado a los sellos Machin del Reino Unido para contar algunas estampillas o sellos bobina folleto aparte de la hoja de sellos habituales de venta libre.

En más o menos al mismo tiempo el fenómeno fue descubierto por Huig Tielman en los Países Bajos que lo vio en la 25c sellos de la reina Juliana folleto que había sido impreso en rollos con la mitad izquierda arriba y la otra mitad abajo. De este modo podría decir folletos procedentes de la izquierda de los de la derecha!

Huig me inspiró a tener una buena mirada a todos los sellos impresos fotograbado y descubrí que se podía establecer la dirección de la imprenta, básicamente, en todos los sellos que habían sido impresas con cilindros no tan sólo en huecograbado, sino también en litografía offset y en los recreos!

Le di las cuatro direcciones - la dirección preferencial, donde la tinta se derivarían - B códigos [horno = hacia arriba], O [onder = abajo], L [a la izquierda] y R [a la derecha]. Estoy utilizando esta forma de designar a la dirección de la impresión desde 1974.

When the reel [or sheet] of already printed stamps is coming out of the press the not yet dried ink will stay behind a little bit and thus flow - as seen standing in front of the press - backwards! The direction of printing thus corresponds to the direction of where the stamps are that still need to be printed. NOT the direction of where the already printed stamps are going!

In studying Argentinian postage stamps - thanks to Antonio Rubiera in getting me so far - I found some nice examples of the direction of printing:

Cuando la bobina [o sheet] de sellos impresos ya está saliendo de la prensa, la tinta aún no se seca se quedará un poco y por lo tanto el flujo - como visto en pie delante de la prensa - al revés! La dirección de la impresión por lo tanto corresponde a la dirección de donde están los sellos que aún deben ser impresos. No la dirección de donde los sellos impresos ya van!

You can clearly see the horizontal waves the ink forms as well!

This can happen when the printing cylinders get mounted the other way around; should the directions of printing have been perpendicular then we certainly have 2 different cylinders used. I will show some examples of that later..

no es una doble impresión! Tinta fluye con la dirección de la impresión como el sello de Australia o los sellos 5 pesos !

Subject: El raro sello 1169a F/F 30p Colecc.sellos postales

Esta es mi ultima adquisicion el raro tizado F/F 1169a 30p "Colecciones sellos postales", ademas de este esta el tizado F/N, el neutro N/N y los mates.Al estudiarlo me encontre con estas caracteristicas que muestro en el grafico siguiente comparandolo con el otro tizado F/N, entonces me surgieron las siguientes preguntas:
Porque me muestra dos colores en cada detalle de la viñeta?...es como primero se imprimio el color verde-amarillento y despues el verde oscuro pero desfasado de aquel, y la cosa viene de abajo hacia arriba, cosa que no ocurre con el F/N?, el porque de la mancha en el borde inferior del sello?....el ejemplar que tengo esta Mint....por eso deduszco que hay un error de impresion....ahora....solo se dio en esta plancha donde viene este sello ? o me sirve como patron general para identificarlo de los otros, es decir del F/N, utilizando estas caracteristicas para identificarlo sin utilizar la lampara UV ?, porque si no es asi , este seria una variedad y buscaria otro para compararlo. Si alguien tiene este sello comparelo y por favor diganme si es igual al que tengo o no, para poder esclarecer estas dudas que tengo con respecto a este hermoso sello de los papeles modernos....

the 30c you displayed has been printed on normal coated paper! That is, the so-called "mate" is also coated but with a heavy layer of "clay" that reacts "strange" to the green ink. This modified paper hardly allows the ink to flow in a particular direction as it normally should - especially as these stamps have been printed on the Goebel reel-fed printng press!

There is NO second colour! This phenomenon is called "direction of printing" and was noticed about 1973 by Douglas Myall for the UK Queen Elisabeth Machin stamps!

Direction of printing for the black colours!

The direction of printing is still subject of some discussion!

Hola de nuevo a todos. Creo que la voy a liar un poco. Espero que "piensen" antes de contestar . Me voy a referir solamente a este sello.
Son 10 ejemplares. Los 5 de arriba y el primero por la izquierda de abajo, fosforescentes (gracias Luis). Los 4 últimos, fluorescentes.

Ahora viene mi hipótesis:

Los sellos fosforescentes fueron impresos en máquina de 5 cuerpos, es decir: Cyan, Amarillo, Magenta, "gris" y negro.
Esta última plancha de negro solamente en las letras y números y algunos detalles para intensificar color y sombras.
Como vemos hay un gris con trama más tupida que la segunda impresión del negro con trama más abierta (puntos y espacios mayores).



En la siguiente imagen vemos el desplazamiento (para mí, mal registro del gris y el negro) en el número 3. Pero si nos fijamos en 1, solamente vemos una pequeña "sombra" gris (mal registrada con los otros 3 colores). Pero no aparece un negro por debajo como tendría que ser. Sin embargo en 2, sí aparece debajo del gris una trama de negro. Para intensificar color y dar profundidad a la flor. Comprobé esta trama y es exactamente igual a la trama del negro de las letras y números. En grado y separación.

Ahora vamos con el fluorescente (gracias Luis ). En primer lugar vemos que ya no hay "gris". Solamente puntos negros y blanco.



Si comparamos fosfo y fluo, vemos que la trama primera del negro no tiene nada que ver con el negro del fluo.



Si vemos un detalle mal registrado en la flor, vemos que no existe el gris y hay solamente punto negros plenos.



Como conclusión y espero no "ofender" a nadie y siempre en mi modesta opinión, estos sellos se imprimieron con distintas técnicas.
El fosforescente a cinco colores y el fluorescente a 4 tintas.
SI APARECE ALGÚN SELLO FLUORESCENTES CON LAS LETRAS "BORROSAS", ACEPTARÍA MI EQUIVOCACIÓN.

Why does the grey comes out only in the phosphorescent stamps and not in the fluorescent ones???

Seguramente es esto lo que ocurre y no las 5 "tintas". Pero me sigue la duda porqué no ocurre en los fluorescentes.

I did give Omar the suggestion to read this general thread on the Direction of Printing!

En el sello de letras nítidas el cyan y el magenta estãn fuera de registro. En el de letras borrosas todos los colores están en perfecto registro. Las letras salieron borrosas porque seguramente el cilindro de impresión del color negro estaba imprimiendo desajustado o el papel que llegaba a ese color no tenía la tensión suficiente y entonces "patina". En otras palabras, el contacto del papel debe ser una tangente, o sea que cuando el cilindro impresor lo toca debe hacerlo en un solo punto de la circunferencia que constituye la sección del cilindro. Es evidente que aquí ese contaco fue mayor y me imagino que le faltaba tensión al papel. Saludos.

According to José Merlo the excessive flow of ink is due to a bad tension of the paper making the cylinder not just touch the reel but sticking to it for a split second...

La máquina Goebel usada para la impresión de esta serie tenía solo tres cilindros para los colores y uno para el negro. No había lugar para uno del "gris". La observación sobre la absorción de tinta según el papel es muy respetable pero ahora ya es muy difícil comprobarlo. Merlo

Muchas gracias Sr. Merlo por su tiempo... y ya que estamos ... en los ejemplares que tengo de esta serie $a (pocos ),
siempre ocurre esta "aparición" del gris en los fosforescente. En los fluo, no. Es cuestión de papeles?. Si es así, en esta serie, tenemos fácil distinguir fosfo de fluo, sin utilizar lámpara, no?.

The question why just the phosphorescent paper [or to a much lesser degree this phenomenon - of excessive ink flow - occurs in fluorescent paper] is somehow clear now. The paper tension was different.

Photogravure stamps ALWAYS have a preferential direction in which the ink is flowing NO MATTER what the PAPER TENSION is!

In Huig Tielman's discovery of the DOP there were no spikes or rounds! The Dutch stamps being printed in autotypical photogravure had a very loose screen i.e. the dots mostly were completely separated from each other [and did not have the same surface - surface-variable hence the autotypical] and the load of ink can be seen "falling down"










Huig was the first in the Netherlands to realize the importance of this discovery! The two of us did subsequently managed to establish the direction of printing for all Dutch commemoratives and for most of the definitives! Although for the latter we are still to expect some surprises!

I am sure Douglas M. would NOT have seen the phenomenon in these Dutch stamps had he ever seen them at all....

By the way, these stamps have a very thin outline that prevents us the see the spikes etc.... as they are not there! A few years later the 25c stamp was issued without these outlines!

All stamps - as they are displayed here in this position - have the ink flowing downwards. Huig Tielman referred to this as "A" where the other half of the cylinder would have "B" [ink flowing upwards]. The stamps come from Dutch booklets with their numbering that practically almost was incorporated in the text of the booklet.

After 40 years since its discovery I will not be surprised that anyone still has difficulties with establishing the DOP's in the case of the autotypical Queen Juliana Regina printings!

The direction of printing can be detected when the doctor blade is not properly adjusted. It´s a consecuence of how the angle of the doctor blade´s edge touches the cylinder.

La dirección de la impresión puede ser detectada cuando la racleta no está ajustada correctamente. Es la consecuencia, a veces, de cómo el ángulo de la racleta, su filo, toca el cilindro impresor. the direction of printing can be established in practically all cases of photogravure with tradtional etchings no matter whether the doctor blade is functioning OK! With a properly functioning doctor blade there will be still enough ink in the screen dots that tend to get out of them! Screen dots are often not filled! Just the edges give ink! It is the rotation that causes the preferential movement of the ink!

The direction of printing (DOP) has been established by me for most photogravure stamps I have ever seen from the very first of Bavaria in 1914 onwards... The fact that sheet-fed was used first and later reel-fed did not play a role! Only after the introduction of the EME I found it often hard to establish the DOP...

For me it´s hard to believe that screen dots sometimes are not filled. If we consider that printing cylinder is submerged in an ink vat, unless air gets into the screen dot cell, the cell must be filled.

Estoy de acuerdo con Rein, en el porque un sello muestra la dirección de la impresión.

Las celdillas son como pequeños vasos contenedores de tinta, si usted inclina un vaso debido a la fuerza de gravedad el liquido buscará ir hacia abajo, mas aparte, si le agregamos la inercia por el movimiento se concentrará mayormente en las paredes contrarias a la dirección del movimiento la concentración es tanta que el papel no alcanza a absorberla lo suficientemente rapido y expulsa la tinta que no puede absorber, las celdilla superiores estarán un poco más vacías.

Este es un caso extremo donde la tinta es demasiado fluida, si no sucediera esto la tinta explotaría de la misma forma para todos lados.

I agree with Rein why stamps show direction of printing
The cells are like little ink container vessels, if you tilt a vessel the gravity will do liquid go down besides you move the vessel up liquid is going to be concentrate in the opposite wall of movement, the paper do not absorb ink fast enough then ink is expelled, upper cell will be emptier.

This is a extreme case where ink is too fluid, if ink does not flow like Rein says then ink explode in all directions in the same way.
