The grey tulip - 80c Trigo

Mensaje por Rein »

While everybody is looking for the grey tulip, there is no information about the relative chronology of the various types of paper of the 80c Trigo!

How come????

We can find in Holler the date of issue - 12.01.1955 and in Kneitschel [1974] we just find the three types of paper - tizado, mate importado and mate nacional... In his 1958 edition Kneitschel just refers to one version with mentioning the types of paper.

Does that mean there was only one by that time??? And which one was it????

We have three types of paper in 4 different main printings!

Wiggins Teape delivered coated paper with a parallel watermark and a asymmetrical paper wire structure [papel rayado]:

A: direction of paper horizontally resulting in a watermark with the line of AЯ horizontally as well (m)
B: direction of paper vertically resulting in a watermark with the line of AЯ vertically as well (M)

The A-paper I have is with cancellation dates in 1955, the first date for the B-paper is in 1957.

In 1958 we find uncoated paper delivered by Zárate with an orthogonal watermark and with just one direction of paper.

C: direction of paper vertically resulting in a watermark with the line of AЯ horizontally (M as both directions are perpendicular)

Years later, in 1962, Wiggins Teape, delivered UNcoated paper with a parallel watermark and a asymmetrical paper wire structure [papel rayado]:

D: direction of paper vertically resulting in a watermark with the line of AЯ vertically as well (M)

The first coated paper issued in 1955 is the type of paper that is supposed to have the grey tulip!

Of the stamps with a coated Wiggins Teape paper, parallel watermark, asymmetrical wire, and a horizontal direction of paper there are two major colour shades!

So what are we hunting for????

An accidental badly mixed ink resulting in a stamp that looks a bit more grey that the one at the right??? Are we looking for a freak?? I.e. not a regular printing but an accidental failure like a diagonally applied perforation or a folded edge that got perfed?

Should we have the chronology of the type of papers OK then we should wonder whether have observed that all stamps have the direction of printing being L - flowing ink towards the left - may mean just ONE cylinder!

Although this stamp may not have been so common it turns out hat we must have had several different cylinders!

Cylinders with at least 10x10 stamp images may suggest that a single plate flaw is not likely to occur more than once in a 100 copies of a particular printing!

At first glance the coated paper of Wiggins Teape does not reveal any plate flaw or printing sheet positional characteristic!

Where as the Zárate paper - probably because the 80c Trigo with it was more common - does reveal some noticeable characteristics!
