Tela - a wartime restriction

In 1941 an English type of paper got introduced for Argentinean stamps - not only the definitives but also most of the Commemoratives of that period.

The paper mesh we see comes from a weave that has vertical lines/threads and horizontal threads of various densities; the usual density is 28-30 vertical threads(warp) per horizontal centimeter AND some 20 horizontal threads (weft) per vertical centimeter! The gauges noted as follows - 28/20, 30/20, 24/20, etc...

The so-called Tela paper has a grid/wire gauge of 24/20; I will show you the original English stamps as well for comparison.

If we read the Campbell Patterson New Zealand Handbook we will be surprised!

It is about the only British Commonwealth philatelic handbook that goes deep into paper matters! You will not find this in the Stanley Gibbons books, nor in Robson Lowe, nor in Brushen-White!



They explain the concept on paper mesh - or paper wire structures - and its importance to NZ philately. In fact they state that you can not really specialize NZ if you will not get acquainted with that concept!

The introduction of the coarse paper [Tela] was urged by the war circumstances.

What could have been the factual reasons for it??? A quicker manufacturing process???

There were also other aspects involved...

Anyway, the use of Tela in New Zealand since July 1941 does not occur much earlier than the use of Tela in Argentina. It was Wiggins Teape paper that must have manufactured in the UK not much earlier than the beginning of 1941.... taking into account the time it needed to be shipped [from the UK to Argentina or NZ].

In the UK the definitives of King George VI were to be printed in pale colours to save ink and the deminish wear of the printing cylinders [photogravure]. What Stanley Gibbons does not tell us is that at the same time for these stamps the coarse paper got introduced!
