In 1939 thanks to the National Exposition (Landesaustellung) a whole load of stamps got issued and they have not been described quite properly as the main Swiss catalogue of Zumstein wants us to believe!

Of the landscape stamps the 10rp and 20rp had been printed by the Postwertzeichendruckerei in Bern on their new Goebel reel-fed press [since 1936] for a combined recess and photogravure!

The 30rp stamps have been printed in reel-fed photogravure by Courvoisier S.A. in La-Chaux-de-Fonds.

Only direction of printing R [ink flowing towards the right] has been found.

The 10rp and 20rp only have direction of printing U [ink flowing upwards] both for recess [!!] and photogravure...

Imagen

The fact that we can see the ink flowing upwards in recess as well is something that luckily occurs more often in Swiss stamps.

The monocoloured medium sized stamps for the National Expositon stamps of 1939 - printed in photogravure - are not so easily described. It is rather complicated!

Even the Zumstein Special (2000 edition) is not accurate enough!

Drucker: ZNr. 228, 230-239: Wertzeichendruckerei PTT, Bern, ZNr. 229y: Courvoisier SA., La Chaux-de-Fonds
All 9 coil stamps - 3 face values: 5rp, 10rp, 20rp in 3 different languages: French, Italian and German - have been printed by the Wertzeichendruckerei on their Goebel reel-fed press! This time the recess part of the machine had NOT been used.

All coil stamps hve been printed of smooth papier i.e. no gum breaking pattern (!) and the coloured fibers are relatively thick and long. This type of paper had been manudfactured by the paper mill of Biberist.

All 3 30rp stamps (in counter sheets) have been produced the same way! Same press! Same paper and same direction of printing L!

Now we get the complications!

The 5rp in coils have TWO shades! All printed on the Goebel reel-fed press, all on smooth paper of Biberist.
