The 2nd copy of your stamp does not curl - the one at the right - so I am not sure the direction of paper is vertical. From your original scan I would say that the direction of paper is horizontal as well. In that case we have 2 different watermarks, not a turn of 90 degrees of the unprinted sheet....
Please show me a better scan of that stamp!
I still have my doubts and maintain the above request although I realize a scan might not help much!
The right-hand stamp is a lot thicker as you have measured AND it is a mint stamp with full gum so it may not curl at all or slightly along the long axis. And that does NOT necessarily mean the direction of paper is along the long axis!!!! I have had my doubt about many gummed stamps and eventually had the gum removed to find out the curling had tricked me..... Only by magnifying the uncovered surface we may see the preference of the fibres better and unfortunately I have not been able to make good scans that can show us that
